10 | Art in America: Generative Art: The History and Future of Creative Machines, Various Authors, 2020

"Generative Art. It crossed my mind that I might be able to introduce this issue on generative art—work created using automated systems of various kinds—by letting a predictive text algorithm compose most of this note. So pervasive has machine learning become in recent years that “auto text,” a technology that once produced laughably clumsy suggestions for email responses, has become an indispensable part of my workday. And though the technology that gently nudges me to write better, or at least more courteous, emails proved to be not quite self-aware enough to summarize an issue of an art magazine, it may be only a matter of time before I have a robot collaborator. Artificial intelligence is altering simple routines while driving more consequential social developments by enabling large scale data mining and ubiquitous surveillance. Artists adopting this technology find themselves simultaneously blessed and cursed. Their work has an instant hook, one that can be highly marketable. Any creation, however crude, can be made to seem urgent if it suggests a connection, however tenuous, to the powerful AI technology that just might lead us to a Terminator style apocalypse.

11 | Arte Ambientale, Urban Space, And Participatory Art, Tanga, Martina, Routledge, 2019

"Working in 1970s Italy, a group of artists--namely Ugo La Pietra, Maurizio Nannucci, Francesco Somaini, Mauro Staccioli, Franco Summa, and Franco Vaccari--sought new spaces to create and exhibit art. Looking beyond the gallery, they generated sculptural, conceptual, and participatory interventions, called Arte Ambientale (Environmental Art), situated in the city streets. Their experiments emerged at a time of cultural crisis, when fierce domestic terrorism aggravated an already fragile political situation. To confront the malaise, these artists embraced a position of artistic autonomy and social critique, democratically connecting the city's inhabitants through direct art practices."-- Provided by publisher

15 | Crossing gender boundaries: fashion to create, disrupt and transcend, Andrew Reilly (Editor), Ben Barry (Editor), 2020

This volume presents a collection of the most recent knowledge on the relationship between gender and fashion in historical and contemporary contexts. Through fourteen essays divided into three segments—how dress creates, disrupts, and transcends gender—the essays investigate gender issues through the lens of fashion. __Crossing Gender Boundaries__ first examines how clothing has been, and continues to be, used to create and maintain the binary gender division that has come to permeate Western and westernized cultures. Next, it explores how dress can be used to contest and subvert binary gender expectations, before a final section that considers the meaning of gender and how dress can transcend it, focusing on unisex and genderless clothing. The essays consider how fashion can both constrict and free gender expression, explore the ways dress and gender are products of one other, and illuminate the construction of gender through social norms. Readers will find that through analysis of the relationship between gender and fashion, they gain a better understanding of the world around them.

23 | Frame by Frame: A Materialist Aesthetics of Animated Cartoons, Hannah Frank; Daniel Morgan; Tom Gunning, 2019

For most of the twentieth century, the making of animated cartoons was mechanized and standardized to allow for high-volume production: thousands of drawings were inked and painted onto individual transparent celluloid sheets (called "cels") and then photographed in succession, a labor-intensive process that was divided across scores of artists and technicians, most of them anonymous. In order to understand how the industrial mode of production influenced the medium's visual style, this book regards each frame of a given animated cartoon as a historical document in its own right. This new consideration of the materiality of the medium analyzes cartoons frame by frame to expose hitherto unseen qualities of the image.

24 | From ASCII art to Comic Sans : typography and popular culture in the digital age, Karin Wagner, 2023

A fresh and provocative take on typography, computing, and popular culture, viewed through four idiosyncratic typographical phenomena from the digital age. From ASCII Art to Comic Sans offers an original vision of the history of typography and computing in the digital age, viewed through the lens of offbeat typography. We often regard text as pure information and typography as a transparent art form without meaning of its own. In this richly illustrated book, however, Karin Wagner offers a fresh perspective that shows how text is always an image that conveys meaning, and how typography, far from being meaningless, has in fact shaped modern visual and material culture in significant ways. By juxtaposing four odd typographical phenomena-the pedantic practice of ASCII art, the curious-looking machine-readable typefaces, the blurry letters of dot matrix printers, and the much-maligned font Comic Sans-Wagner paints a vivid picture of how functional technologies influence popular culture when used in ways their original creators never intended.

40 | Marcel Duchamp: Second Edition (World of Art), Dawn Ades, Neil Cox, David Hopkins, 2021

A revised and expanded edition of one of the most original books ever written on the enigmatic artist Marcel Duchamp. Genius, anti-artist, charlatan, guru, impostor? Since he arrived on the scene in 1914, Marcel Duchamp has been called all of these. Almost no other artist of the twentieth century has inspired more passion and controversy, nor exerted a greater influence on art. At the same time, Duchamp continually challenged the very nature of art and strove to redefine it as conceptual rather than as product by questioning why the medium was mostly a "retinal" experience. Always the provocateur, Duchamp never ceased to be engaged, openly or secretly, in activities and works that transformed traditional art making. Through his works like Fountain; Bicycle Wheel; L.H.O.O.Q.; and Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2, Duchamp played with the idea of what art can be, opening new possibilities for future generations. This revised entry in the World of Art series, written by three leading experts on twentieth-century art, and published with support of Duchamp’s widow, is one of the most original books written on this enigmatic artist.

42 | NOT NATIVE AMERICAN ART: fakes, replicas, and invented traditions, Janet Catherine Berlo, Joe Horse Capture, 2023 ,

The faking of Native American art objects has proliferated as their commercial value has increased, but even a century ago experts were warning that the faking of objects ranging from catlinite pipes to Chumash sculpture was rampant. Through a series of historical and contemporary case studies, Janet Catherine Berlo engages with troubling and sometimes confusing categories of in authenticity. Not Native American Art examines the historical and social contexts within which people make replicas and fakes or even invent new objects that then become "traditional." Berlo follows the unexpected trajectories of such objects, including Northwest Coast carvings, "Navajo" rugs made in Mexico, Zuni mask replicas, Lakota-style quillwork, and Mimbres bowl forgeries. With engaging anecdotes, the book offers a rich and nuanced understanding of a surprisingly wide range of practices that makers have used to produce objects that are "not Native American art."

Hundreds of illustrations and diagrams support the text. The primary emphasis is on blocking actors and positioning the camera for mood, meaning and continuity editing. This book delves deeply into controlling the audience's understanding and perception of time and space; designing in-camera time transitions; compressing and expanding time; composing creative shots for cinematic storytelling; choosing between objective and subjective storytelling; motivating camera moves; choosing lenses; using screen geography and film grammar for clarity; planning shots with continuity editing in mind; knowing how and when to cut; beginning and ending scenes; and using storyboards for planning and communication. Several chapters are devoted to how to block and shoot action involving travel, pursuits, searches, dialogue, groups and driving. 54 | The Art of Copying Art, Penelope Jackson, 2022

This book is a study of the history, role and significance of copying art. Copies have enjoyed a different status from authentic artworks and though often acknowledged, very rarely have they been considered collectively as a genre in their own right. This volume showcases a variety of examples from copies of famous artworks made and used as props in movies to those made innocently by student artists as part of their training. Examining the motivations for making copies, and reflecting on the reception of copies, is central to this book. Copies have historically filled voids in collections, where some sadly languish, and have become a curatorial burden. In other cases, having a copy assists in conservation projects and fills the place of a lost work. Ultimately by interrogating a copy role and intent we might ask ourselves if viewing a copy changes our experience and perception of an artwork.

Claude Monet was the leading French Impressionist landscape painter. His work featured in the groundbreaking Impressionist exhibition of 1874, where the title of one of his paintings led to the name of the highly influential movement. A feature of his style was to paint en plein air, showing a single subject in different lighting conditions, whether it be trees, haystacks or the water lily ponds in his own garden at Giverny. The book describes Monet's technique, the materials he used, and his impact on his contemporaries as well as successive generations of artists.

59 | The Great Artists: Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Thomas Stevens, Auguste Renoir, 2019

This introductory series to the great artists of the past 150 years looks at their lives and inspirations, and showcases a selection of their most significant paintings. Pierre-Auguste Renoir was one of the foremost Impressionist artists, exhibiting six paintings in their famous 1874 exhibition and often painting scenes of middle-class leisure outdoors - en plein air - with Monet. But Renoir's primary interest lay indoors, in depictions of sensuous female nudes and intimate domestic scenes, painted in a warm, bright palette. This book explores the life and work of this leading light of Impressionism and shows how his work developed in a different direction to many of the others in the group, as he absorbed some elements of a classical style into his painting.

62 | The Sensing Body in the Visual Arts: Making and Experiencing Sculpture (Sensory Studies Series), Rosalyn Driscoll, 2020

"This is the first book to provide experiential and theoretical grounds for integrating the bodily, somatic senses into our understanding of how we make and engage with visual art. The somatic senses include touch, kinaesthesia, proprioception, balance, temperature, gut feelings, emotions, pain and pleasure, and range from surface contact to deep internal stirrings. They connect the outer world to one's innermost "body-mind", making the body both a field that perceives and interacts with art. Rosalyn Driscoll shows how using that touching can deepen what we know through seeing, and even serve as a genuine alternative to sight. She proposes that tactile, somatic memory and experience is embedded in visual perception of art. Awareness of the somatic senses offers rich aesthetic and perceptual possibilities for art making and appreciation.

71 | World of Art: Art and Myth in Ancient Greece, Thomas H. Carpenter, 2021

An essential visual handbook for anyone interested in Greek myth written by T. H. Carpenter, one of the world’s leading experts on myth in ancient art. The ancient Greeks recorded their mythology on vase paintings, engraved gems, and bronze and stone sculptures, offering depictions that often predate any references to the myths in literature or recount alternative, unfamiliar versions of these tales. In some cases, visual art provides our only evidence of these myths, as there are no surviving accounts in ancient Greek literature of stories such as the Fall of Troy or Theseus and the Minotaur. Art and Myth in Ancient Greece is a comprehensive survey of myth as it appears in Greek art. This classic volume has been updated with text and full-color images of more than three hundred scenes from Greek sculptures, vases, and gems. Aiding in the identification of mythological scenes and explaining chronological developments in style and subject matter, this book is an essential reference for anyone interested in the art, drama, poetry, or religion of ancient Greece. 356 color illustrations.

From understanding the XYZ axis and basic skeleton, to thinking in 3D space and creating mannequins of all levels of detail, the book deals with everything the reader needs to know before moving on to the figure itself. Tom presents in step-by-step details exactly how to add the muscles and depict truly believable poses. Every part of the body is presented in detail, with easy-to-follow breakdowns of the torso, arms, and legs, and the often-tricky head, hands, and feet. The author also shares insightful, game-changing anatomy tips, many learned from years of working for major clients in the entertainment industry and teaching others to draw the human figure, both in person and online. This combination of experiences and skills make Tom an outstanding author of this must-have book for artists in all areas of figure drawing.

96 | Caribbean and Latinx Street Art in Miami (Routledge Advances in Art and Visual Studies), Jana Evans. Braziel,

This study focuses on street art and large-scale murals in metropolitan Miami/Dade County, while also foregrounding the diasporic and aesthetic interventions made by migrant and second-generation artists whose families hail from the Caribbean and Latin America. Jana Evans Braziel argues that Caribbean and Latinx street artists define and visually mark the city of Miami as a diasporic, transnational urban space. These artists also help define Miami as a cosmopolitan city, yet one that is also a distinctly Caribbean and Latinx urban space, and simultaneously resist but also (at times reluctantly) participate in the forces of gentrification and urban re/development, particularly through the myriad and complex ways in which street art contributes to city branding and art tourism. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, urban studies, American studies, and Latin American/Caribbean studies.

100 | Creative Photography - The essential to mastering your camera and improving your photographic skills, Black Dog Media, 2022

At its simplest level, taking a picture is done to record an event or capture a memory; Taking a selfie, or a snap of loved ones on holiday, perhaps. This is how most of us have been introduced to photography. Our camera phones have become our first point of contact with the world of photography and, for many, it can lead on to more creative pastures with the purchase of a more advanced device such as a Compact System Camera or a DSLR. At this point, photography can seem quite daunting; especially for beginners. There seems to be a lot of technical knowledge that must be learnt, terms that need to be understood, even mathematics that have to be worked out. The more you uncover about it, the less you seem to know. Don’t worry, photography is not nearly as complex and intimidating as you might think. Sure there are technical aspects, but with the help of this guide we hope to give you a solid grounding in all you need to know to use your camera with confidence and use it creatively.

101 | Crush the Composition (for Raymond Rhine), Scott Kelby, 2024

Uncover the transformative power of composition and elevate your photography! Most books on photographic composition all say the same things: they talk about the rule of thirds, where to place the horizon line, repeating patterns, S curves, frames within frames—the list goes on and on. But with all these books on composition’s “rules,” photographers still struggle to create great shots. Why? Because composition isn’t being taught the right way. Instead of just learning “the rule of thirds,” you’ll learn how to work a scene, change your perspective, use layers to add depth, emphasize simplicity, and much more. Once you implement the techniques and process that Scott teaches you, you’ll know the secrets behind great compositions and be able to create captivating images that will leave a lasting impression on your viewers.

103 | Dada Data: Contemporary Art Practice in the Era of Post-Truth Politics, Sarah Hegenbart (Editor), Mara-Johanna Kölmel (Editor), 2023

What is the relevance of Dada and its artistic strategies in our current moment, one marked by post-truth politics, information floods and big data? How can contemporary art highlight the neglected nuances of cultural representation in the present day? While it may feel like we are living in a period of anomaly with the rise of the alt-right, this book shows how the Dada movement's artistic response to the aggressive nationalism and fascism of its time offers a fruitful analogy to our contemporary era. Dada's counter-cultural strategies, such as the distortion of reality and attacks on elites and rationality, have long been endorsed by artistic avantgardes and subcultures. Dada Data details how modern-day movements have appropriated such tactics in their ways of addressing the public both on- and offline. Bringing together contributions from interdisciplinary scholars, curators and artists working in global contexts that explore an array of artistic modes of persuasion and resistance, the book demonstrates how contemporary art can bring out neglected nuances of our post-truth moment.

The darling of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited almost every year throughout his long career, Waterhouse completed artworks that were celebrated for their rich, glowing colour and veiled eroticism. Embracing the style of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which had split up several decades before, Waterhouse depicted dramatic, beautiful and haunting female figures, perfecting his own vision of the all-powerful femme fatale. His paintings embrace a dreamy, romantic manner, with a sensuous handling of paint that gave them a unique identity. Delphi's Masters of Art Series presents the world's first digital e-Art books, allowing readers to explore the works of great artists in comprehensive detail.

The ADD method, which provides the scaffolding for the entire book, did not change at all. During this time it has been taught to thousands of practitioners and used successfully in many industrial projects.

125 | French Gothic Ivories: Material Theologies and the Sculptor’s Craft, Sarah M. Guerin, 2022

This volume is the first to consider the golden century of Gothic ivory sculpture (1230-1330) in its material, theological, and artistic contexts. Providing a range of new sources and interpretations, Sarah Guérin charts the progressive development and deepening of material resonances expressed in these small-scale carvings. Guérin traces the journey of ivory tusks, from the intercontinental trade routes that delivered ivory tusks to northern Europe, to the workbenches of specialist artisans in medieval Paris, and, ultimately, the altars and private chapels in which these objects were venerated. She also studies the rich social lives and uses of a diverse range of art works fashioned from ivory, including standalone statuettes, diptychs, tabernacles, and altarpieces. Offering new insights into the resonances that ivory sculpture held for their makers and viewers, Guérin's study contributes to our understanding of the history of materials, craft, and later medieval devotional practices.

135 | How to Draw Props, Mitch Leeuwe, 2021

Let me introduce myself. I’m Mitch Leeuwe and am an illustrator from the Netherlands. I always drew a lot as a kid. I even had the childhood dream to become an animator at Disney. During my teenage years, I lost that dream. Luckily, I slowly started drawing more and more. When I was 19, I began to do some freelance work as a graphic designer, which made me consider picking up drawing again. I attended several drawing programs at schools, but I learned most from online resources. Now, I’m a freelance artist working on visual development. This means I design characters, props, and backgrounds for games, animation, and toys. However, you probably know me from my Instagram account, where I release tutorials and more. My goal is to create a place where people can learn what I wanted to learn when I started out.

136 | How To Learn Anatomy,Mitch Leeuwe

Most of the time I’m drawing cartoon characters, these are not hyper realistic. And because of that I’m always focused on simple shapes first. But even when you want to draw realistic anatomy, I think this book can be of some good help. Because these simple shapes will be a good basis before you starting to add all those details and muscles on top of it. You can use it to learn from or use it for reference when you are drawing a difficult pose. When you are just starting out the best way to learn is to take small steps. Maybe start with copying the drawings inside this book and try to examine all the different parts. Once you get comfortable at copying those drawings you could start looking for photos of people where you can see those muscles. Like a photo from a boxer or a ballerina in a clear pose. Draw those characters and draw the muscles on top of those drawings, try to see how those muscles work and where they are connected. It takes a lot of time to learn anatomy, so don’t get worried that it takes a lot of time to learn. Try to have fun and enjoy the process.

Looking at Andy Warhol’s legacy as maker and muse, this book offers a critical examination of the coalescence of commerce and style. The book argues that one figure more than any other anticipated this moment: Andy Warhol. Beginning with an overview of art and fashion’s deeply entwined histories, and then picking up where Warhol left off, Merchants of Style tells the story of art’s emboldened forays into commerce and fashion’s growing embrace of art. As the two industries draw closer together than ever before, this book addresses urgent questions about what this union means and what the future holds.

150 | Modern Art and the Remaking of Human Disposition, Emmelyn Butterfield-Rosen, 2021

How artists at the turn of the twentieth century broke with traditional ways of posing the bodies of human figures to reflect modern understandings of human consciousness.** With this book, Emmelyn Butterfield-Rosen brings a new formal and conceptual rubric to the study of turn-of-the-century modernism, transforming our understanding of the era’s canonical works. Butterfield-Rosen analyzes a hitherto un - examined formal phenomenon in European art: how artists departed from conventions for posing the human figure that had long been standard. In the decades around 1900, artists working in different countries and across different media began to present human figures in strictly frontal, lateral, and dorsal postures. The effect, both archaic and modern, broke with the centuries-old tradition of rendering bodies in torsion, with poses designed to simulate the human being’s physical volume and capacity for autonomous thought and movement. This formal departure destabilized prevailing visual codes for signifying the existence of the inner life of the human subject. Exploring major works by Georges Seurat, Gustav Klimt, and the dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky— replete with new archival discoveries—__Modern Art and the Remaking of Human Disposition__ combines intensive formal analysis with inquiries into the history of psychology and evolutionary biology. In doing so, it shows how modern understandings of human consciousness and the relation of mind to body were...

158 | Realizing the Values of Art : Making Space for Cultural Civil Society, Erwin Dekker, Valeria Morea, 2023

This book provides a novel approach to the understanding and realization of the values of art. It argues that art has often been instrumentalized for state-building, to promote social inclusion of diversity, or for economic purposes such as growth or innovation. To counteract that, the authors study the values that artists and audiences seek to realize in the social practices around the arts. They develop the concept of cultural civil society to analyze how art is practiced and values are realized in creative circles and co-creative communities of spectators. The insights are illustrated with case-studies about hip-hop, Venetian art collectives, dance festivals, science-fiction fandom, and a queer museum. The authors provide a four-stage scheme that illustrates how values are realized in a process of value orientation, imagination, realization, and evaluation.

160 | Retrospection and Revision in Modern and Contemporary Art, Literature and Music, Mette Gieskes, Mathilde Roza, 2024

This interdisciplinary book investigates the various ways in which North American and European modern and contemporary artists, authors, and musicians have returned to earlier works of their own, engaging in inventive revivals and transformations of the past in the present. The book is distinctive in its focus on such revisits, as well as in the diversity of art forms under review: in addition to visual art, the book explores fiction, poetry, literary criticism, film, rock music, and philosophy. This scope, together with the time-span covered in the book, from the 1850s to the twenty-first century, allows for a broad view on retrospection and revision. The case studies presented here offer a multifaceted exploration of the widely different goals to which practitioners of the arts have made retrospection and revision functional against the background of cultural, social, political, and personal forces.

161 | Rough: Drawing in 2 Strokes and 3 Moves, Pierre Pochet, 2022

Do you know how to draw a square, triangle, and rectangle? Well, then, you know how to draw! Rough: Drawing in 2 Strokes and 3 Moves provides you with a way to start drawing that is based on a very simple observation: the human body, as well as everything surrounding us, can be broken down into elementary and basic geometric shapes. The technique that author and teacher Pierre Pochet shows you here has no fine art or academic ambitions. Instead, it shows you how to quickly draw from memory a facial expression or a bodily movement, to flesh out a picture, to create a perspective, or to sketch a scene. This approach to drawing is particularly useful for those who have no artistic training but who are considering a career in a creative field, whether that be advertising, design, or graphics . . . as well as for anyone who simply wants to learn how to draw!

162 | Rural Arts Management, Elise Lael Kieffer & Jerome Socolof, 2025

The arts and arts management exist in every corner of the world, from the largest city to the smallest town. However, just as a metropolis and a hamlet bear little resemblance to each other despite similar basic needs, arts organizations in the former frequently bear little resemblance to those in the latter, and many foundational arts management texts give little attention to rural settings. This book combines insights from research and practice to fill that knowledge gap and help readers understand arts administration in rural communities. Focusing on the North American setting but including comparative examples and references from around the world, this book examines how areas of practice familiar to any arts manager work in rural areas, including research and best practices for navigating the paucity of resources frequently encountered in rural communities. Emphasizing a “by rural, for rural” perspective, this book frames the arts as integral components of vibrant rural communities and valuable tools for meeting these communities’ needs.

164 | Slim Aarons: Style: Photographs, Slim Aarons, Shawn Waldron, Kate Betts, Getty Getty Images, Jonathan Adler, 2021

Glamorous fashions, personalities, and places captured by iconic photographer Slim Aarons Slim Aarons, at least according to the man himself, did not photograph fashion: “I didn’t do fashion. I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.” But despite what he claimed, Aarons’s work is indelibly tied to fashion. Aarons’s incredibly influential photographs of high society and socialites being unambiguously themselves are still a source of inspiration for modern day style icons. Slim Aarons: Style showcases the photographs that both recorded and influenced the luminaries of the fashion world. This volume features early black-and-white fashion photography, as well as portraits of the fashionable elite—like Jacqueline de Ribes, C.Z. Guest, Nan Kempner, and Marisa Berenson—and those that designed the clothes, such as Oscar de la Renta, Emilio Pucci, Mary McFadden, and Lilly Pulitzer.

This version is a translation of the Korean book that accomplished that very feat. This book is suitable for beginner and intermediate-level artists who find it difficult to transpose a real-life space onto a flat surface, not necessarily for top-level experts.

177 | The Comics Form: The Art of Sequenced Images, Chris Gavaler, 2022

Comics are a type of comic and a type of image sequence but not a type of narrative. The title of Cohn's The Visual Language of Comics and its subtitle, Introduction to the Structure and Cognition of Sequential Images, also imply that "comics" and "sequential images" are synonymous (2013). Rather than asserting definitions, some scholars only imply criteria. Chute includes extended analyses of Jacques Callot's 1633 The Miseries and Misfortunes of War and Francisco Goya's 1810-20 The Disasters of War alongside chapters on Joe Sacco and Art Spiegel man, functionally categorizing all four as the same type of art since each is illuminated by the same analytical approach (2016). Articulating a similar strategy, Oravetz argues that a formalist approach becomes not a mode of definition, but a mode of interpretation. The question of comics becomes not, "What is a comic?", a question that has proven problematic and unanswerable, but "How can we do readings of objects through a comics lens?" Thus, notions of comics’ definition can be viewed not as exclusive categories, but tools in an analytical toolkit.

Children are often told that art matters--but the truth is that very often it's hard to know why it really does. Museum visits can feel like a chore as does having to learn the names of the big artists we're all meant to love (but perhaps don't quite in the way we're supposed to). This is a huge pity because--grasped the right way--art has a deep capacity to improve our lives and offer us a sense of joy and mental well-being. Here is a guide to art for children with a difference: in a tone that's kindly, informative, unstuffy, and at times rightly irreverent, this book explains how art can fit into our lives. We learn where the impulse to make art comes from, what art to look at in certain moods, how to go around a museum without getting bored, and why--without even realizing it--we all become experts in art by decorating our first bedrooms. This is an innovative guide to the importance of art, written in a way that will enchant children and, along the way, teach their favorite adults one or two vital things as well.

199 | Why a Painting Is Like a Pizza : A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art, Nancy G. Heller, 2019

The first time she made a pizza from scratch, art historian Nancy Heller made the observation that led her to write this entertaining guide to contemporary art. Comparing modern art not only to pizzas but also to traditional and children's art, Heller shows us how we can refine analytical tools we already possess to understand and enjoy even the most unfamiliar paintings and sculptures. How is a painting like a pizza? Both depend on visual balance for much of their overall appeal and, though both can be judged by a set of established standards, pizzas and paintings must ultimately be evaluated in terms of individual taste. By using such commonsense examples and making unexpected connections, this book helps even the most skeptical viewers feel comfortable around contemporary art and see aspects of it they would otherwise miss.

201 | World of Art: Contemporary African Art ,Sidney Littlefield Kasfir 2020

Contemporary African art has grown out of the diverse histories and cultural heritage of the African continent and its diaspora. It is not characterized by any particular style, technique or theme, but by a bricolage-like attitude towards art-making, incorporating and building upon the structures from which older, pre-colonial and colonial genres were made. In this revised and updated edition of Contemporary African Art, Sidney Littlefield Kasfir examines the major themes, developments and accomplishments in African art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Organized thematically, the book includes new chapters on the history of African photography and the growth of the global art market, alongside significant discussions of patronage and mediation, artistic training and national and diaspora identities.
